Foundations of Community Leadership in Tech: IBMZ digital gender equality impact – Melissa Sassi

The digital divide is growing everyday between females and their males’ counterpart and is influencing young girls’ participation in tech and computer science careers. We can state that women have lower participation in tech compared to the previous decade, where they were leading technological creations. That’s why the involvement of multiple stakeholders is crucial to support STEM education for all, and here comes the role of IBMZ in collaboration with several NGOs to advance the non-formal education of digital skills to attract more young girls into tech. An important part is integrating digital literacy and introductory enterprise computing to students and encourage peer-to-peer empowerment so these students can go out and advocate for these skills in their local communities. A live example is the Z ambassadors’ program which aims to develop community leadership in tech by encouraging students to use the coding and Zskills they gained to address a challenge in their community and create creative solutions using these skills at their school or university. In this talk, we would also highlight women peer-empowering through the Z ambassador program, which helps females to actively get involved and pursue careers in tech. It’s all about boosting girls’ confidence to explore technology and help them feel welcomed in tech to counter the digital divide.
